Nantes
We love visiting Nantes, the city of Jules Verne. It is about three quarters of an hour from our home. We have documentation to guide you through the old town. We always start with a cup of coffee in la Cigale, a bar-restaurant built in 1895 and still entirely in its original Art Nouveau decoration. It is since 1964 a Monument Historique. At a short distance you find the shopping mall La Pommeraye dating from the same period. There are various churches and museums worth a visit. We find the Saint Pierre cathedral very impressive, as well as the castle (15th century) of the duke of Brittany. This castle has been renovated for 5 years. You can visit the square inside the wall and the outside of the buildings for free.

Shopping in Nantes
For those who love to shop there is amongst others a Galerie Lafayette in the city centre and loads of nice shopping streets. In addition there are on the outskirts of Nantes several very large shopping centres. Atlantis is our favourite. You find in Atlantis a huge supermarket as well as an IKEA to give an idea of the size of the mall.
Machines de l’ile de Nantes
At walking distance of the city centre, on the other side of the Loire river you find “Machines de l’ile de Nantes“. In a former shipyard machines are made and exhibited in the style of the Jules Verne, who originated from Nantes. There is amongst others a mechanical elephant (12 meters high and 8 meters wide) who walks a 3 km/hour with space for about 50 passengers. An unusual site and well worth a visit.
